Ocean Shell Studios is proud to continue a rich legacy of Paua shell craftsmanship, rooted in the Southland region of New Zealand. Our journey honours the remarkable history of Fiordland Souvenirs and the visionary individuals who brought Paua artistry in New Zealand to life.
The Early Days: Mac McCabe and Fiordland Souvenirs
In the 1950s, Anthony John (Mac) McCabe relocated his family to Stewart Island, drawn by the abundant Paua resources. Mac, known as "The Old Boy" to his family and staff, pioneered Paua diving using the traditional "hooker system" with its heavy helmet gear. At that time, Paua meat export was not yet a developed industry, but Mac saw potential in the shells' unique beauty.
In 1964, Mac established Fiordland Souvenirs in Riverton. By the late 1970s, as New Zealand’s tourism industry grew, the business flourished, employing 20–25 staff at its factory. Fiordland Souvenirs became one of the world’s longest-standing manufacturers of Paua shell products, known for exceptional craftsmanship and innovation.
Remember the traditional Paua souvenirs from the 1960s and 70s? Paua chip resin plates, Paua salt and pepper shakers, big, chunky Paua pendants on chains, polished Paua shells by the thousands, and even large Bic-type pens with Paua chip inlays - these were all big sellers from Fiordland Souvenirs back in the day.
A Family Enterprise
The McCabe family played a central role in the company’s growth. Mac’s four sons contributed to the business over the years:
- Chris, who focused on North Island sales and overseas sourcing, and was Bryn’s co-owner until 2014.
- John, who left to start his own business, Ocean Gems, in Christchurch before his passing in 2021.
- Anthony (Tiny), the production genius, who sadly passed away in his mid-40s.
- Bryn, who became the sole owner and manager in 2014, steering the company into a new era of creativity and innovation.
A New Chapter: Ocean Shell Studios
In 2021, Bryn decided to pass the torch, and Ocean Shell Studios stepped in to continue the legacy of Paua artistry in Fiordland Souvenirs. Already based nearby and deeply involved in crafting with shell, we were a natural successor. Under our stewardship, we remain committed to the traditions established by Mac and the McCabe family while embracing modern techniques, sustainability, and innovation.
